Research Intiative Goals
A partnership of funders and nonprofits have launched a groundbreaking national research project on strategic volunteer engagement in the social sector.
The goal of the project is to better understand why funders and nonprofit executives do (or do not) prioritize volunteer engagement. The research findings will be used to launch a national conversation about elevating philanthropic support for and prioritization of strategic volunteer engagement.
About the Surveys
This research initiative includes a national survey of nonprofit executives (CEOs and Executive Directors) and a companion survey of funders, with additional interviews and focus groups with funders to enhance the learnings. A report on the findings is expected to be released in the fall of 2022.
Sponsors
Sponsors of the research include The Leighty Foundation, the Lodestar Foundation, VolunteerMatch, The National Alliance for Volunteer Engagement, and UJA Federation of New York, with technical assistance provided by Independent Sector. The research is being conducted by the Do Good Institute at the University of Maryland, which is well known and respected for their cutting-edge research on trends in volunteering, giving, and social capital.
What is Strategic Volunteer Engagement?

Organizations that leverage volunteers and their skills to accomplish their missions are significantly more adaptable, sustainable, and capable of going to scale [1]

Organizations that effectively engage volunteers are equally as successful in accomplishing their mission as their peers without volunteers, but at almost half the median budget [1]

High net worth donors who volunteer give up to ten times more money than those who don’t volunteer, and most donate to the organizations in which they are involved [2]

Effective volunteer engagement has been shown in some cases to reap up to a $6 return on every dollar invested when considering the financial value of volunteer involvement [3]

Why Strategic Volunteer Engagement is Important
Most funders would agree that current and future grantees are facing a daunting future of shrinking financial resources and dramatically escalating needs. Thankfully, there is a vastly underutilized and virtually unlimited renewable resource from which to draw—volunteer energy!
However, the challenge won’t be as simple as increasing the number of people who want to volunteer. A large percentage of nonprofit organizations that say they so desperately need more help also say they do not currently have the infrastructure to effectively deploy additional volunteers.
Effectively tapping this resource requires building innovative organizational infrastructures to connect those who volunteer with high impact opportunities that empower them to make a real difference! Success results when an organization engages and empowers its volunteer resources to produce the greatest possible impact on a problem or need.
